Slug Generator
Turn a title or phrase into a lower case, hyphen separated slug for a web address.
Worked example
"Crème Brûlée: A Simple Recipe!" becomes creme-brulee-a-simple-recipe.
How this works
The text is made lower case. An accent on a Latin letter is removed, so é becomes e, but nothing else is changed into another letter: ß, ø and letters in Greek, Cyrillic, Chinese and other scripts stay as they are. Apostrophes are removed without leaving a gap, so "don't" becomes "dont".
Every other run of spaces, line breaks, punctuation, symbols or emoji becomes a single hyphen, so a slug never has two hyphens in a row, and any hyphen at the start or end is removed. The symbol & becomes a hyphen and is not turned into the word "and". A slug is a suggestion only. This tool does not check that it is unique or free to use on your site.
What this result means
The result is your text as a lower case slug with single hyphens between words, ready to use as part of a web address.
Assumptions and limitations
- Web addresses may show or encode letters such as ß or ø differently, so check a slug that contains them before you use it.
