Volume Converter

Convert a volume between metric, US customary and Imperial units, keeping US and Imperial units distinct.

Enter zero or more. A volume cannot be negative.

Worked example

1 US gallon = 3.785411784 L, but 1 Imperial gallon = 4.54609 L, so 1 Imperial gallon ≈ 1.200949926 US gallons. They are genuinely different units. 1 m³ = 1,000 L, and 1 ft³ = 28.316846592 L.

How it works

US customary and Imperial volume units are kept separate throughout. A US gallon is legally exactly 231 cubic inches (3.785411784 L) and an Imperial gallon is legally exactly 4.54609 L, so Numerila never labels either one as a plain, ambiguous “gallon”. The same goes for quarts, pints and fluid ounces: a US pint is 16 US fluid ounces, an Imperial pint is 20 Imperial fluid ounces, and a fluid ounce is a volume, never a mass. Enter zero or more: a volume cannot be negative.

A result written as a plain number is exact. A result starting with “≈” has been rounded to 10 significant figures, because its exact decimal never ends or is too long to read comfortably. When an exact value is long, its full digits are shown underneath. The calculation itself is never rounded: only the display is.

What this result means

The converted value uses exact, defined conversion factors. A plain number is exact; a result starting with “≈” is rounded to 10 significant figures.

Common mistakes

  • Assuming a US and an Imperial gallon, pint or fluid ounce are the same size: they are not.

Assumptions and limitations

  • Cups are not included in this general converter. For US cups, tablespoons and teaspoons, see the Cooking Unit Converter.
  • Negative values are rejected, since a volume cannot be negative.
