Area Converter

Convert an area between metric and imperial units such as square metres, hectares and acres.

Enter zero or more. An area cannot be negative.

Worked example

1 ha = 10,000 m². 1 acre = 43,560 ft² = 4,046.8564224 m². 1 mi² = 640 acres, and 1 m² ≈ 10.76391042 ft².

How it works

Every imperial area unit here (square inch, square foot, square yard, acre, square mile) is derived by squaring the equivalent exact length conversion, not by reusing a plain linear length factor, so the squared relationship is always mathematically correct. The international foot is used, not the US survey foot, and the acre is exactly 43,560 square feet. The hectare is exactly 10,000 m². Enter zero or more: an area cannot be negative.

A result written as a plain number is exact. A result starting with “≈” has been rounded to 10 significant figures, because its exact decimal never ends or is too long to read comfortably. When an exact value is long, its full digits are shown underneath. The calculation itself is never rounded: only the display is.

What this result means

The converted value uses exact, defined conversion factors. A plain number is exact; a result starting with “≈” is rounded to 10 significant figures.

Assumptions and limitations

  • Negative values are rejected, since an area cannot be negative.
  • The international foot and acre are used, not the US survey foot.
