Text Sorter
Sort the lines of a text from A to Z or Z to A, changing nothing else.
Worked example
The lines banana, Apple, cherry and apple, sorted A to Z, become apple, Apple, banana and cherry.
How this works
Each line is compared using your browser's English (UK) alphabetical order, so capital letters do not jump ahead of lower case ones, and an accented letter such as é sorts with e. Numbers are compared as text, so 10 comes before 2.
Only the order of the lines changes. Lines are not trimmed, changed to one case or merged, so a line that appears twice still appears twice. A blank line counts as a line, and it sorts first in A to Z and last in Z to A. Because the lines move, the result uses the first kind of line break found in your text. To remove repeated lines, use the Duplicate Line Remover.
What this result means
The result is the same lines in alphabetical order, A to Z or Z to A. No line is changed or removed.
Assumptions and limitations
- There is no numeric or custom sort in this version. Use the Duplicate Line Remover or the Whitespace Cleaner to tidy lines first.
