Text Difference Checker
Compare two texts line by line and see which lines were added, removed or left unchanged.
Comparison
Key: a plus sign marks a line that was added, a minus sign marks a line that was removed, and lines with no mark are unchanged.
Worked example
If the original has the lines one, two and three, and the changed text has one, 2 and three, then "one" and "three" are unchanged, "two" is shown as removed and "2" is shown as added.
How this works
The texts are compared one line at a time. A line only matches another if it is exactly the same, so a capital letter or an extra space makes it a different line. The kind of line break, such as Windows or Unix, is not compared. The tool looks for the largest set of lines the two texts share and marks everything else, so the fewest lines are shown as changed. Where a group of lines was replaced, the removed lines are listed before the added ones.
This is a comparison only. It does not merge the texts, mark changes within a line, or tell you who wrote what. Very large texts that differ throughout cannot be compared in the browser, and you will be asked to compare a smaller part.
What this result means
The result lists every line once, marked as added, removed or unchanged, so you can see which lines differ between the two texts.
Common mistakes
- Expecting changes inside a line to be highlighted. A line that differs at all is shown as one removed line and one added line.
