Square Footage Calculator
Find the area of a rectangle from its length and width, in square feet, square metres and square yards.
Worked example
A room 12 ft by 10 ft is 12 × 10 = 120 square feet. That is the same as 11.1483648 square metres, or about 13.33 square yards.
How we calculated this
The area of a rectangle is its length multiplied by its width. Each side can use its own unit, because both are converted to metres exactly before they are multiplied. The area is then shown in square feet, square metres and square yards, using the same exact factors as the Area Converter.
This page measures a single rectangle. For an L shaped room or any other shape, work out each rectangle separately and add the results together yourself.
A result written as a plain number is exact. A result starting with “≈” has been rounded to 10 significant figures, because its exact decimal never ends or is too long to read comfortably. When an exact value is long, its full digits are shown underneath. The calculation itself is never rounded: only the display is.
What this result means
The result is the area of a rectangle, shown in square feet, square metres and square yards.
Common mistakes
- Multiplying lengths in different units without converting them. This calculator converts each side for you.
