Flooring Calculator

Work out the flooring area a room needs, with an optional allowance, pack coverage and price that you enter.

How would you like to enter the surface?

Enter a percentage. Leave blank to add nothing.

Enter this to see how many whole packs you need. Leave blank to skip packs.

Enter your own price in any currency, and choose what it is for. Leave blank to skip the cost.

Worked example

A room 5 m by 4 m is 20 m². With a 10% allowance you would buy 22 m². If each pack covers 2.4 m², that is about 9.17, so you need 10 whole packs. At 30 a pack, that costs 300.

How we calculated this

The floor area is the length multiplied by the width, or the area you enter. If you add an allowance, the area you need is the floor area increased by that percentage. Nothing is added unless you type a percentage.

Packs are only worked out when you enter how much one pack covers. Then the area you need is divided by the pack coverage and rounded up to a whole pack. Without a pack coverage the area is never rounded. A cost is only shown if you enter a price, either for a pack or for each unit of area.

A result written as a plain number is exact. A result starting with “≈” has been rounded to 10 significant figures, because its exact decimal never ends or is too long to read comfortably. When an exact value is long, its full digits are shown underneath. The calculation itself is never rounded: only the display is.

What this result means

The result is the flooring area you need, including any allowance you chose, and whole packs only if you entered a pack coverage.

Assumptions and limitations

  • It does not allow for the pattern, the shape of the room, underlay or trims. Use the allowance to leave room for cuts.
  • The price is yours, in any currency, and a cost is only shown if you enter one.
