Split Bill Calculator
Split a bill equally between a number of people.
Each person’s equal share
Real payments may need rounding to the smallest unit of your currency, and shares rounded that way may not add up to the bill exactly.
Worked example
A bill of 100 split between 8 people is 100 ÷ 8 = 12.5 each, exactly. Split between 3 people it is 33.333… each, which never ends, so it is shown as an approximation with the exact fraction, 100/3.
How we calculated this
Each person’s share is the bill amount divided by the number of people, which must be a whole number of at least one. The calculation is exact and does not assume any currency or number of decimal places. When the exact share is long or never ends, only the display is rounded, and it is marked with “≈”.
This tool splits a bill equally and does not add a tip; the Tip Calculator works out a tip separately. It does not share out leftover pennies or cents between people, because how to do that depends on your currency and payment method.
A result written as a plain number is exact. A result starting with “≈” has been rounded to 10 significant figures, because its exact decimal never ends or is too long to read comfortably. When an exact value is long, its full digits are shown underneath. The calculation itself is never rounded: only the display is.
What this result means
The result is the bill divided equally between the number of people you entered.
Assumptions and limitations
- Real payments may need rounding to your currency’s smallest unit, and shares rounded that way may not add up to the bill exactly. This tool does not share out the leftover.
- It splits equally and does not add a tip. Use the Tip Calculator for that.
