Military Time Converter
Convert between 12-hour time and 24-hour (military) time.
24-hour (military) time
- 12-hour time
- Without a colon
Worked example
1:05 PM is 13:05, because any PM hour from 1 to 11 is 12 hours later on the 24-hour clock. 12:00 AM is 00:00 and 12:00 PM is 12:00.
How we calculated this
The 24-hour clock runs from 00:00 (midnight) to 23:59. For PM times from 1:00 to 11:59, add 12 to the hour. 12 AM becomes 00 and 12 PM stays 12. Going the other way, hours after 12 lose 12 and take PM, and 00 becomes 12 AM.
24:00 is not accepted, because midnight is written 00:00 here. This tool converts the notation only; it does not change time zones (use the Time Zone Converter for that) or read military date-time groups.
What this result means
The result is the same time of day written on the 24-hour clock (00:00 to 23:59) and on the 12-hour clock with AM or PM.
Common mistakes
- Treating 12:00 AM as noon: it is midnight, 00:00. Noon is 12:00 PM, written 12:00.
- Writing midnight as 24:00: this tool uses 00:00 and does not accept 24:00.
Assumptions and limitations
- Converts the notation only. It does not change time zones and does not read military date-time groups.
