Grade Calculator

Work out an overall grade as a percentage from the points earned and the points possible in each assessment.

Assessments

Enter the points you earned and the points each one was worth. Fill in or remove every row.

Your numbers are worked out in your browser and are not sent to Numerila.

    Worked example

    An assignment marked 18 out of 20 and a test marked 33 out of 40 give 18 + 33 = 51 points out of 20 + 40 = 60. Then 51 ÷ 60 × 100 = 85, so the overall grade is 85%.

    How we calculated this

The overall grade is the total points earned divided by the total points possible, multiplied by 100. A larger assessment has more influence because it carries more points. This calculator does not use percentage weights. If your course weights its categories, the Weighted Average Calculator is the better fit.

Points possible must be above 0, and points earned can be 0 or more. You can enter more points than were possible, for example for extra credit, and then the overall grade can be above 100%. The result is not capped.

The result is a plain percentage. Grading bands differ between schools and countries, so no letter grade is given, and this does not say how your school would grade the work.

A result written as a plain number is exact. A result starting with “≈” has been rounded to 10 significant figures, because its exact decimal never ends or is too long to read comfortably. When an exact value is long, its full digits are shown underneath. The calculation itself is never rounded: only the display is.

    What this result means

The result is the total points earned as a percentage of the total points possible across every assessment you entered.

    Common mistakes

    • Entering a percentage in the points earned box instead of the points. Enter 18 for 18 out of 20, not 90.

    Assumptions and limitations

    • It uses points only, so it does not apply percentage weights. Use the Weighted Average Calculator if your categories are weighted.
