Final Grade Calculator
Find the score needed on a final assessment to reach a target course grade.
Worked example
With a current grade of 80%, a final worth 25% and a target of 82%, your current grade counts for 80 × 0.75 = 60 points of the course grade. The final has to supply the other 82 − 60 = 22 points, and 22 ÷ 0.25 = 88. You would need 88% on the final.
How we calculated this
The course grade is the current grade multiplied by (1 − the weight of the final), plus the final score multiplied by the weight, with the weight written as a decimal. Solving for the final score gives: final score = (target − current × (1 − weight)) ÷ weight.
The answer is shown as calculated and is never capped. A result below 0% means your target is already secured under this model, even with 0% on the final. A result above 100% means the target cannot be reached from the final alone under this model.
This is a plain weighted average. It does not know your school's rounding, minimum pass marks or how other assessments are combined, and it is not academic advice.
A result written as a plain number is exact. A result starting with “≈” has been rounded to 10 significant figures, because its exact decimal never ends or is too long to read comfortably. When an exact value is long, its full digits are shown underneath. The calculation itself is never rounded: only the display is.
What this result means
The result is the score needed on the final assessment to reach your target course grade, under a plain weighted average.
Common mistakes
- Entering the weight as a decimal. Enter 25 for a final worth 25%, not 0.25.
Assumptions and limitations
- It works from one current grade and one final. It does not combine several remaining assessments.
