Base64 Encoder & Decoder
Encode text to Base64, or decode Base64 back to text, entirely in your browser.
How it works
Base64 turns text into a string of letters, digits, plus signs and slashes. It is an encoding, not encryption, so anyone can decode it and it gives no privacy. The text is first converted to UTF-8 bytes, so accented letters, other scripts and emoji all come back exactly as they went in.
When decoding, spaces and line breaks are ignored, because Base64 is often wrapped over several lines. Characters that are not part of Base64, wrong padding, and bytes that are not valid UTF-8 text are all reported as errors instead of being shown as broken text. This is the standard alphabet with = padding. The URL safe version, which uses hyphens and underscores, is not accepted. Text that contains half of an emoji or another unpaired surrogate cannot be turned into UTF-8 without changing it, so it is refused.
What this result means
The result is your text converted to or from standard Base64, entirely in your browser.
Examples
- "Hello" encoded to Base64: SGVsbG8=
Assumptions and limitations
- Standard Base64 only, with no URL safe version.
- It works on text, not files or images.
