Recipe Scaler

Scale ingredient quantities in a recipe by a factor you type, or by a change in servings, with exact fractions.

How do you want to scale it?

Start each line with a quantity, then the rest of the ingredient. For example 2 cups flour, 1.5 tsp salt, 3 eggs or 1 1/2 cups sugar.

Your recipe is worked out in your browser and is not sent to Numerila.

Worked example

Scaling "2 cups flour" from 4 servings to 8 servings gives 4 cups flour, because 8 ÷ 4 = 2. Scaling "1 1/2 cups sugar" from 4 servings to 6 servings gives 2 1/4 cups, shown as 2.25 cups. The unit never changes, only the quantity.

How it works

Every quantity is multiplied by the scale factor. By servings, the factor is the desired servings divided by the original servings. You can also type a factor directly. Both servings, or the factor, must be above 0.

You can enter whole numbers, decimals, fractions such as 1/2 and mixed numbers such as 1 1/2. The sums are exact, so a third of a cup scaled by three is exactly one cup, and nothing is rounded. If a scaled quantity is a repeating decimal, such as two thirds, it is shown with a leading ≈ and its exact fraction beside it. Results are written as decimals, not as mixed numbers.

Ingredient names and their order are kept, and a repeated ingredient is never merged. Units are never converted, so cups stay cups. Use the Cooking Unit Converter for that, and note that it does not turn weight into volume. Only quantities change. Cooking times, pan sizes and seasoning may need their own adjustment.

A result written as a plain number is exact. A result starting with “≈” has been rounded to 10 significant figures, because its exact decimal never ends or is too long to read comfortably. When an exact value is long, its full digits are shown underneath. The calculation itself is never rounded: only the display is.

What this result means

The result is your ingredient list with every quantity multiplied by the scale factor, either typed or worked out from your original and desired servings.

Assumptions and limitations

  • Units are never converted. Scaling never turns cups into pints, it only changes the number.
  • Cooking time, equipment and method may not scale in proportion, even when the ingredient quantities do.
