Result
- Mixed number
- Decimal
- Percentage
How we calculated this
Worked example
1/4 + 1/4 = 2/4, which simplifies to 1/2.
How it works
This tool adds, subtracts, multiplies, or divides two fractions using exact whole-number arithmetic, then simplifies the result to its lowest terms. It never converts your fractions to a decimal partway through the calculation, only afterwards for display. Numerators and denominators must be whole numbers, and a denominator cannot be zero. Very large numerators or denominators may exceed what a calculation like this can represent exactly.
A result written as a plain number is exact. A result starting with “≈” has been rounded to 10 significant figures, because its exact decimal never ends or is too long to read comfortably. When an exact value is long, its full digits are shown underneath. The calculation itself is never rounded: only the display is.
What this result means
The result is shown as a simplified fraction, with a mixed-number, decimal and percentage equivalent underneath.
Assumptions and limitations
- Mixed numbers are shown in the result but not accepted as input. Enter an improper fraction instead, for example 3/2 rather than 1 1/2.
- There is no separate decimal-to-fraction conversion mode.
